MOTORISTS!...I'm sure you have seen the ads, but unless you have ever ridden a motorcycle ( highly recommended! ) and experienced first hand how different the world looks but more importantly, how the world looks at you, there is really no way of describing it.
I am sure you all have your own opinion of motorcyclists, some of those may be accurate and some not so accurate. However one fact about bikers is, we are human, and somebody's family and friend.
I am sick of reading news reports and post on social media about motorcyclists being killed on our roads, in Ireland, a motorcyclist is 2 to 3 times more likely to be killed in a collision than any other European country. These are shocking statistics that need to change.
Okay okay I know what you are thinking, maybe if we wore hi-vis and/ or reflective clothing?...a great number of motorcyclists do and unfortunately a great number died. Or what about 'lane splitting' or 'white lining'? Well I kinda agree with ya there..to a point, some people can take liberties shooting up the middle of two lanes in free moving traffic, or on the wrong side of the road, this is a dangerous activity and should never be done. Speed is another problem, some sport bike riders believe they have a licence to blast down roads that are simply not designed for it.
But folks, here is the simple be all and end all.
Keep you eyes open! I have seen it countless times, motorists ( and sometimes pedestrians ) think a motorcyclist as inferior beings on our roads. Pulling out at junctions without checking adequately and failing to check rear view mirrors and blind spots when changing lane are the two main problem areas. People, just take that extra second to look and listen and you could save a life. It's not hard to do....really it's not!
Feel free to comment, I'd like to hear your opinions on this matter!
Bren.
